Don’t Wait for the Factory.

Machine Your Own Storefront Door Leaves.

When architectural glazing dealers buy unmachined, raw commercial door leaves (like YKK AP or other major storefront systems), they face a major challenge:

How to prep the hardware.

Sheffield Machinery offer Manual and Automated machinery your shop needs to handle all hinge mortising, pivot pocketing, and multi-point lock routing in-house.

Take control of your project timelines, eliminate factory backlogs, and maximize your fabrication margins.

The Manual Solution

The Galaxy IV Manual Router

The perfect multi-surface solution for mid-sized commercial glazing shops.

  • Simultaneous Milling: Equipped with three independent 1.1 kW motors spinning at 12,000 RPM. This allows your team to rout lock slots, handle holes, and latch channels simultaneously without rotating the profile.
  • Error-Free Alignment: The triple-motor configuration guarantees perfect mechanical alignment across all three surfaces, cutting cycle times by over 60% compared to traditional single-head routing.

The Automated Solution

GARNET PORTA 4-Axis CNC Machine

For high-volume storefront dealers processing commercial door leaves.

  • No Manual Flipping: The 4-axis capability allows a single high-torque 5.6 kW motor to reach and process three distinct surfaces of the door leaf (top, bottom, and front) with absolute precision.
  • Smart Automation: Powered by a FANUC touchscreen interface. Operators simply recall the door recipe, clamp the door using vertical pneumatic pistons, and let the machine execute the cycle.
  • Massive Capacity: Accommodates large-format storefront door leaves up to 144" in length and 5.9" in thickness. Perfect for continuous gear hinges, offset pivots, and deep mortise locks.

  • The Deep Mortise Lock Pocket Problem

Standard mortise locks require a precise, clean rectangular pocket routed straight into the edge of the aluminum locking stile.

    • The Manual Risk: Handheld routers chatter against thick aluminum, leaving jagged edges, rounded corners, and off-center slots that prevent the lock faceplate from sitting flush.
    • The Sheffield Edge: Our copy routers and CNC centers lock the door leaf down with pneumatic clamping. High-frequency 12,000 RPM spindles cut cleanly through the outer wall and internal reinforcing gussets, cutting to the exact depth required for the lock body in a single pass. The faceplate recess is stepped out with perfect, sharp factory edges.
  • Multi-Surface Cylinder & Handle Bores (Perfect Alignment)

A door leaf requires machining on three distinct planes: the lock pocket on the thin edge, the keyed cylinder hole on the exterior face, and the thumbturn or handle rosette on the interior face.

    • The Problem with Part Rotation: If a worker manually unclamps, flips, and rotates a heavy 7-foot or 8-foot door leaf to drill the face holes after cutting the edge pocket, a 1/32” math error means the lock cylinder will not line up with the internal latch mechanism.
    • The Sheffield Edge (GALAXY IV & GARNET PORTA): The door leaf remains entirely stationary. Our multi-spindle and 4-axis setups reference the exact same mechanical datum point.
  • Concealed Vertical Rod (CVR) and Panic Device Prep

For institutional and high-security architectural openings, dealers must prep for Concealed Vertical Rod exit devices. This requires machining complex internal pathways, top and bottom latch cutouts inside the top/bottom rails, and precise chassis mounting holes on the stile faces.

    • The Sheffield Edge: Our 4-axis CNC profile machining centers process the entire length of the door leaf. It handles the deep interior routing for the rod mechanisms and executes the precise face-drilling patterns for the crash-bar mounting brackets, matching the manufacturer's exact digital hardware templates automatically.
